Age appears best in four things: old wood to burn, old wine to drink, old friends to trust, and old authors to read. DESCRIPTION - ORIGINAL VINTAGE HUGE MOBILGAS SOCONY-VACUUM ADVERTISING SIGN. IT MEASURES 75" WIDE FROM POINT-TO-POINT AND 72" TALL. BASED ON THE SMALL NUMBERS AT THE BASE I BELIEVE IT'S CIRCA 1951 (IR 51). ABSOLUTE MUST-HAVE FOR SERIOUS PETROLIANA COLLECTORS!

OVERALL CONDITION - PLEASE SEE MY PHOTOS TO JUDGE CONDITION FOR YOURSELF AND FEEL FREE TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS. I THINK THE OVERALL PRESENTATION IS EXCELLENT FOR ITS AGE BUT IT DOES HAVE THE USUAL FLAWS SEEN ON THESE ITEMS (ALTHOUGH LESS THAN USUALLY FOUND). THERE'S THE USUAL EDGEWEAR, RUST AND PAINT OR PORCELIAN WEAR AT THE EDGES AND NEAR THE HOLES WHERE THE SIGN WAS HUNG... Inv #1 - IR 51. WIKI - Following the break-up of Standard Oil in 1911, the Standard Oil Company of New York, or Socony, was founded, along with 33 other successor companies.

Henry Clay Folger was head of the company until 1923, when he was succeeded by Herbert L. Beginning February 29, 1928 on NBC, Socony Oil reached radio listeners with a comedy program, Soconyland Sketches, scripted by William Ford Manley and featuring Arthur Allen and Parker Fennelly as rural New Englanders. Socony continued to sponsor the show when it moved to CBS in 1934. In 1935, it became the Socony Sketchbook, with Christopher Morley and the Johnny Green orchestra.

In 1931, Socony merged with Vacuum Oil to form Socony-Vacuum. If you love old books please take a moment to visit my other auctions.
